Hometown - Gallery 27, 27 Cork Street, Mayfair, London W1 30th June-12th July

He Hong Wei is one of China’s new contemporary artists. Painting with exuberance and passion, rich colours and firm lines converge, blend and flow, coming together in a pattern of life that is entirely his own.

Birth place, one’s home, carries significant weight in Chinese culture. After many years in search of his art and experience, He Hong Wei felt the longing to return to his hometown. But the years had not been kind, and what he saw was rundown and desolate, a lost way of life, a shadow of his happy childhood memories.

Drawing a great deal from traditional Chinese painting and calligraphy, he also shows the influence of Western masters such as Cezanne and Picasso.

Since 2000, his paintings have been shown frequently in China. Now Oc-Eo Art are proud to be bringing his work for the first time to London. Please visit our web-site for more details, and email for an invitation to the Private View.

Oc-Eo Art will donate 10% of the proceeds of sales from this exhibition to the China Earthquake Appeal.

Oc-Eo Art specialises in contemporary Asian fine art and, in particular, contemporary and modern painting from Vietnam.

Doi Moi (Renovation) was launched in Vietnam in 1986 with a call to ‘untie the strings’, to provide free space for the full development of literature and art.

For artists, ‘untie the strings’ meant refusing the rules of socialist realism, its monotony of style, form and topic. Quickly returning to the rich pre-colonial heritage of their tradition, they have also tried to absorb and digest all the achievements of a century of western modernism - from cubism, expressionism, abstraction, to surrealism, abstract expressionism and pop-art - and to make from this cultural cross-roads, something uniquely Vietnamese.

Oc-Eo Art's collection of both young and established contemporary and fine art from Vietnam perfectly captures the yearning for individual freedom, self-affirmation and personal discovery that has characterised Vietnamese painting since ‘Doi Moi’.
